Don't think twice, it's alright

My favourite version of this Bob Dylan song is recorded by Peter, Paul, and Mary (although I love Dylan’s harmonica…but I got other songs for that).

For obvious reasons, it’s on high rotation these days, and wanted to share it with you. Here’s a live version of Peter, Paul, and Mary. Lyrics are below.

It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe,
It don’t matter, anyhow.
And it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe,
If you don’t know by now.
When the rooster crows at the break of dawn,
Look out your window and I’ll be gone
You’re the reason I’m travelin’ on,
Don’t think twice it’s all right.
It ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe,
Light I never know’d
It ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe,
I’m on the dark side of the road.
Still I wish there was somethin’ you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay,
We never did too much talkin’ anyway,
Don’t think twice it’s all right.
I’m walkin’ down that long, lonesome road, babe,
Where I’m bound, I can’t tell
But goodbye is too good a word gal,
So I’ll just say “fair-thee-well”
I ain’t saying you treated me unkind,
You could uh done better, but I don’t mind
You just sorta wasted my precious time,
Don’t think twice it’s all right.
It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name gal,
Like you never did before
It ain’t no use in callin’ out my name gal,
I can’t hear you anymore.
I’m a thinkin’ and a wonderin’ all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I’m told,
I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul,
Don’t think twice it’s all right.

  1. Hey, I don’t think anyone wasted anyone’s time, for what it’s worth…
You grew, and learnt and learnt to trust someone again, and learnt it’s Ok to allow you heart to open up, and learnt that sometimes, even when you do love someone, things don’t work out, and… it’s alright πŸ™‚
    Hugs Ann.

    • I don’t think he wasted my time. I do wish at some level I’d made some different decisions:

I should never have suggested exclusivity, but wasn’t sure how else to manage to have safe sex with him. He needed / needs to date other people and I should have been confident it would have been okay.

I wish I’d never told him I was falling in love with him, or (more recently), that I HAD fallen in love with him. It scared him too much, with good reason.

I don’t regret how long it took me to say goodbye, because the stark contrast of what it was like when I was with him, then not with him, really became clear to me after our three week break.

      • Good to read your reply. I was just referring to the lyrics…
And I don’t think you shouldn’t have told him. He probably needed to hear it, even if it didn’t have the effect you were hoping for. YOU needed to say it. So you were right to say it.
The fact he wasn’t ready to hear it… sigh!
I type this with a fuzzy brain again. I’m not sure I make sense even to myself. So I’ll stop.
        Sending hugs though.

  2. It seems his reluctance to wear condoms at least partially drove the exclusivity issue prematurely. Plus you were ready for the right relationship–he was still coming to terms with ending his marriage. Hopefully you can find someone who is at the same stage as you and ready to appreciate all you have to offer.

      • Are you missing Him or the space he took up in your life? I never got the sense of passion for him like you had with Johnny Id. With Tony it seemed like you were in love with his potential more than who he was in the moment. I know it’s hard to judge as a reader, so I may be wrong and I don’t mean to devalue your feelings for Tony.

        • I miss HIM. Passionately. It’s why I wrote the piece from my heart. So people would maybe understand. Yes some of it was about his potential but I fell in love with the core of who he is – not just how he made me feel.

  3. Ann – Stumbled here via Reddit, but I’ve stuck around because you are an amazing story teller. I don’t want to admit how much of your blog I’ve read.

Thank you for sharing so many aspects of your journey. Despite different circumstances, I found lots of insights that have already made a difference for me. So thank you for that!

    • Mark – welcome and thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate you enjoy my blog and am sincerely touched that I’ve made a different. Thank you πŸ™‚

And you can read the whole thing if you like but you probably need lots of alcohol or coffee for that!

Hope to continue to see you around here!
