Better to have loved and lost?

I once shared both these poems with my faraway lover, who I still cannot write about because of the emotion I still feel and the wounds I think it may open up.  I’m not sure which side of the fence I’m on…guess it depends on the day.

6th century Japanese poet Otomo No Yakamochi:

“Better never to have met you

In my dream

Than to wake and reach

For hands that are not there.”

Edna St. Vincent Millay:

“After all, my erstwhile dear,

My no longer cherished,

Need we say it was not love,

Just because it perished?”
